Infood

Support households reduce their food waste

Challenge

The majority of food waste is created by households. This adds to global warming while being costly to households. Food waste is a complex problem with a number of targeted solutions. However the number of design solutions within the household environment is very limited.

Design

Infood is a smart kitchen device that aims to help households reduce how much food gets wasted and to support a healthier relationship with food. It responds to the challenge by allowing users to have a better understanding of their stock. It enables easy access to food stock, reminders of expiration and straightforward instructions for freezing and defrosting as well as basic cooking methods.

Insight

A big source of frustration for users was the difficulty of staying on top of what they have in their fridge and using it up before it goes bad. This insight revealed a need for being reminded of items and their time frames.

Research the problem:

  • Lack of adaptability to changing user needs and preferences – the user obliged to adapt to the furniture and not the latter to their needs (furniture fixed size vs available space)
  • Unsustainable or toxic materials used for furniture today
  • Limited end of life options – unrepairable furniture
  • Return of used products or throwing them away and replacing them today is easier than repairing or refreshing and renewing them
  • Fixed and irreversible connections of furniture (screws, glue, materials) often hinder the capacity to repair or amend or upcycle/recycle

Design the product:

  • Flatpacked and foldable – easy and environmental friendly transportation – storage
  • Repairable
  • Adaptable – customised to the end user’s changings taste and needs
  • An approach than can be expanded to a range of products and industries
  • Easy repair and renewal of everyday products by the end user
